Ok Guys.. Here's a little rant about something thats been bothering me for quite some time...
Everyone seems to be saying that gentoo is for power users, and maybe a distro like mandrake or RH Would be better suited for a newbie. I couldn't possiblydisagree more. I too have been around the distro block, I've installed Debian several times. Slackware 8, A couple versions of Mandrake, and Redhat. I've also ran OpenBSD and FreeBSD. when I first started I was about as Newbie as they get... and I only wish that gentoo was around at the time I first started... Sure, the installation is maybe a bit discouraging for a newbie, but its almost impossible to screw it up, after all you have step-by-step instructions telling you word for word waht you need to type.. a monkey could do it! once you follow all of the (EXCELLENT) documentation through the install guide and the desktop guide Gentoo immediately becomes the absolute easiest Distro I've ever seen to manage. I've *NEVER* had a problem with dependencies (Which were all too common under every other distro, including debian) everything I ever wanted to install was as easy as "emerge packagename" I'd be interested to hear why people think Gentoo should be aimed at power users?! if I want to convince someone to run linux the first thing i would do is tell them to install gentoo... if they were REALLY Newbie i'd install it for them and just say "when you want to install something just type emerge pkgame" and I'd point them at google to find out what software is out there. before gentoo i never would have recommended linux to anyone except a few of my geekier friends but now i'm convinced my parents could run it if someone installed it for them.
Bottom Line: Gentoo is the easist distro to use on a regular basis than anything I've ever seen. it is IMHO MUCH Better suited for Newbies than something like Redhat, which will immediately frustrate any new user with RPM Hell!
Opinions?

my blog
sooo, i am willing to spend 400? on a portable mp3 player.
i am temped by either a neuros or an ipod... i simply don't know which one to get, so which would you chose?
pros for the neuros:
i like the neuros for its ability to broadcast to any radio that might be around, making a cassette adapter in my car obsolete. i also love their linux and ogg support.
cons for the neuros:
compared to the ipod it looks cheap and ugly. but i do not mind that so much. there is no official support for europe yet (don't know how well broadcasting will work, and i will need a power adapter...) - this is frightening me a little, since i don't want to spend 400? just to notice that it will not work...
and i would have to import it from the US (i live in germany) but i don't mind doing that...
pros for ipod:
it looks beautiful. it has been around for some time and is known for real good sound quality. there are attempts to make linux work on it and create a replacement firmeware which would playback ogg vorbis as well... ipodlinux.sf.net
cons for ipod:
no linux support, no vorbis support. i don't know whether i like having to do all the tinkering till i can get firewire to work on linux. (but i am sure i could manage to do that.)
soooo. i hva e no idea at all as to which one to buy. please help me

Hey, to help educate my little brother about linux I installed ubuntu-6.06 on a spare partition as I didn't want him messing with my gentoo installation and wanted him to install a distribution for himself. The installation went fine (atleast the files were placed on the partition) however for whatever reason ubuntu didn't install a boot manager which I thought would be no problem.
I added Ubuntu to lilo.conf, ran lilo which reported no problems, then rebooted and ubuntu failed to boot (gentoo still boots fine). It appears the initrd boots giving me a shell but complains about the target filesystem not having /sbin/initctl and not being able to mount /proc /dev etc... so my question is how do I configure lilo from gentoo to boot both distros?
The contents of my lilo.conf:
j'aimerai savoir si il est possible de choisir la r?solution de grub lui m?me (pas en mode console mais le menu grub qui fait choisir linux ou windows) avec les couleurs (les bits) car la j'ai un splash screen pas mal avec des pingouins mais les couleurs et la r?solution
alors est ce possible ??
PS: j'ai chercher sur le
le splash screen ci vous le voulez :

Gentoo Linux 2004.1 (dev-gentoo-sources 2.6.5)
Hi,
I want to use my Mustek 1200 CP parallel port scanner under 64-Bit Linux. The problem is that there is no mustek_pp.conf backend in the "sane-backends" package. Under 32-Bit Gentoo the mustek_pp.conf is available and works. How can I use this scanner under 64-Bit Gentoo?
MorLipf
Installed Gentoo through the guides. At the begining of startup I recieve this error.
Beware I am a total Linux NEWB
fsck.ext2 Nof SUch file or Directory while trying to open /dev/boot
/dev/boot:
The superblock could not be read or does nto describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem, then the superblock is corrupt.
I am using openoffice-ximian 1.3.4, and have not been able to insert OLE objects. When I attempt to make one from a graphics file (jpeg, bmp), it spits out that it couldn't be converted. Is there a fix for this?
