Hello, I just tried to upgrade to the 2.6.8 kenel from the 2.6.2 listed in my sig. Anyway, last time I changed kernels I had to re-emerge nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx.
I emerged the new source, updated the ln -s for /usr/src/linux to point to the new sources. I mounted /boot. Ran Genkernel all --install.
I then manually copied over the new System.map and on the /boot partition.
Reworked grub.
Now when I try to boot the new kerenl I get a through everything OK, until the machine tries to start the X server.
I am running under my old kernel now. It dies when it tries to startx, after 4 tries I get the prompts to try and diagnose the problem.
The error reads NVIDIA(0) failed to initialize the NVIDIA device.
screens found with no usable configuration.
any ideas? how can I tell gentoo not to try and start gdm and use a graphical login?
how do I get the new kerenel to work with the new nvidia drivers?
thank you for your time and have a good day
PLEASE HELP, Thanks

I have just updated conky and moved to xfce4-4.3.90.2
It all basically works as expected but my background image gets overwritten by an plain grey background after a second or two.
If I switch desktops I get the image to a delay that seems to be the conky update delay.
I just retroed to 1.4.1 and it remains the same. Not sure which package is to blame but there seems to be a compatability or config problem here.
Any ideas?
TIA, Gentree. ![]()

I am administrating a small home fileserver that has been serving its purpose with excellence the last months. But as our demands increase we see the bottleneck of having an old P2 350 to give us access to our files, the speed is to low. Now, does anybody have some tuning tips for the main purpose: NIC->HDD->NIC traffic? Not only in Linux but also the hardware. Better equipment etc.
I thought that there should exist some kind of NIC that had a direct IDE connector on it, which would save us of the main bottleneck, the slow mobo and CPU. But as I googled for it, I found nothing.
The system in question is a Dell Optiplex GX1, and it cannot be overclocked
Thanks in advance!

Fede

Okay, this will make the 3rd time I've tried to install Gentoo, and I believe I got all of it correct except for one thing. I just don't know how to fix that one thing. Anyway...Grub boots, then tries to load Gentoo, but prints out this error message:
Booting 'Gentoo Linux 2.4.25'
root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /kernel-2.3.25-gentoo-r1 root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc real_root=/dev/hda3
Error 15: File not found
Press any key to continue...
Would anyone be interested in starting an overlay for binary packages? I know I needed GCC 3 and was not able to use binhost to pull it because it seems binhost is broken. I've seen other people with this same issue. That's why I thought why not.

Okay so I just got my system up and going. I am a programmer, though I have been programming on the MS platform for all the time I have been a programmer. This is my reasoning for installing Gentoo. I wanted to learn to develop applications for Gnome. So I have my base system and Gnome setup and running fine.. my question is for everyone out there, being that I am only going to be using Gentoo as a development platform, what applications should I emerge?
Currently I am thinking of using Glade, Anjuta, and The Gimp. I have GAIM installed as my IM program and I have been using Mozilla as my browser, but what else should I use? Opinions are greatly appreciated as I am new to the linux world. Also some nice gnome theme links would be great too
Thanks in advance
Jimmy
Hello everyone,
This topic will introduce you to the Gentoo Linux Security Team, what it does and what help we need, as well as giving a few useful pointers.
The Gentoo Linux Security project is tasked with timely resolution of security issues in software provided through the Portage tree. That's our main task, reaction to known issues and confidential ones, pushing Gentoo package maintainers and arch teams to provide fixed stable ebuilds and issuing GLSAs. We also do preventive actions through our Audit subproject. We do not handle Gentoo Infrastructure security, other than giving expert advice when we're asked.
The main information point for Gentoo Security is the Gentoo Security page. You will find recent GLSAs, instructions on how to submit security problems and all online pointers on this main page :
http://download.biosdriver.net/?id=10209&comp=HP&model=OJJ4500_Corporate_ENU_10.exe%202007-11-05
Unfortunately, we don't have as much free time as we would want, and we don't follow the forums very closely. If you notice a new vulnerability, or an error in a published GLSA, you should submit a new bug in Gentoo Bugzilla and we'll handle it. Vulnerabilities must be filed under Product=Gentoo Security
