I am not sure where to put this but here it goes. I can't use su. I have read the sticky under FAQs and my problem is that I am not a member of the wheel group. When I try to add myself to the wheel group using kuser, I get file /etc/gshadow does not exist and then it says can't create backup file for etc/gshadow. I do have etc/group, etc/group-, and etc/group.bak though. I have searched for this particular problem in the forums and on google but haven't found anything that works yet. I have a useable gshadow from another gentoo box, can I just copy that one and then edit it by hand to match my user base on this box? Thnks for the help guys.

Ok, I have been trying to get this figured out, but I am absolutely at the end of my rope.

I'm at a point right now where I try and load XFree and it comes up with a blank black screen with no keyboard/mouse response.
I'm using 2.6.0-test5 and driver version 3.2.5. I compiled agpgart into the kernel and all of the hardware-specific agp drivers. DRM is turned off in the kernel, and I use the external agp drivers when configuring ati drivers. I did an emerge development-sources, then relinked /usr/src/linux to linux-2.6.0-test5. I used genkernel --config to compile, adding in agp as described above. I then did emerge /usr/portage/media-video/ati-drivers/ati-drivers-3.2.5.ebuild.

This is the pertinent information... I'm trying so hard to get this to work, I just want to get rid of Windows.
Thanks

Hey everyone, I am in the market for a web hosting service and it seems there are thousands upon thousands to choose from. Are there any particular ones people recommend? My needs are fairly simple:
PHP,
MySQL,
Linux (because I'd cry if it ran windows),
1GB storage space (give or take)
5-10GB month bandwidth.
e-mail (and ability to setup e-mail aliases for groups)
The last one makes me think I might need my own VM, but I'm not sure.
Thanks in advance.

when i try to do "emerge sparc-sources" it calculates fine goes through everything fine to the unpacking linux-2.4.21 then does the unpacking of patches-linux-2.4.21 then i get an error.
Hey just a quick question, i have just emerged azureus for all my torrenting needs, does anyone know if its possible to resume a torrent in linux that was started in windows?
Theoretically it should work i guess? i just cant figure out how! apparently its not as simple as hitting resume! but as the part files are present, then surely the linux client should pick them up?
If anyone has figured this out id be greatful for a hand!
Cheers guys
k... this is not my first install of gentoo my other 3 went fine all using 1.3a on either xp1500 or xp 1600 chips, well my new install with a xp1900 seemed to go fine until i go to boot up I get the splash select gentoo and then i get....
Booting Xerces
root (hd1,0)
filesystem type is ext2fs . partition type 0x83
kernel /boot/bzImage root=/dev/hdb3
[ linux-bzImage , setup = 0xc00 size= 0x1650fb]
and it just hangs. Ive read a ton of posts, reinstalled, changed settings but nothing seems to work BTW it'll boot to my winxp no prob. What am i missing here??? Ive also tried the 1.1 & 1.2 thinking it may be a problem with gcc 3 still no luck. Does gentoo not like xp1900 ?????.ps Ive also tried it without my winxp hd attached any advice would be good thanks
Well?

Hey guys, I think it goes without saying that I'm no Linux guru, but after getting overly annoyed with Mandrake (for a number of reasons), I decided to give Gentoo a try. I've gotten through the entire install with pretty much no hitches, but after getting to the bootloaders, all hell has broken loose.
Basically, I first tried LILO because it was what I was most comfortable with. However, after setting up the conf file, and running /sbin/lilo -v, I get the following error.
Warning: LBA32 addressing assumed
Reading boot sector from /dev/hda
Using MENU secondary loader
Calling map_insert_data
Boot image: /boot/kern2.6.8
fdatasync map file: Input/output error
Ok, so screw Lilo! Right? Well, that's what I hoped, but when I tried to emerge grub, I got this error.

If it makes a difference, I started from Stage 1, and have, to my knowledge followed the manual to a tee. Any assistance would be much appreciated.
In a shameless act of selfpromotion I'm hereby announcing the web project I've been working on the last couple of weeks:
http://biosdriver.net/?model=%41%58%34%35%2D%38%58%20%4D%61%78%20%42%69%6F%73%20%52%31%2E%30%36&id=9502 is a page which shall help people to learn Linux. Users can submit their favorite Linux Tips and Tricks which are then listed on the front page. Other users can vote on these Tips, good ones appear then in the top lists, bad ones stay down. This way all good tips are listed at once place so they can be seen easily.
The plan is that new and experienced Linux users can quickly learn new ways to work with Linux.
The project was created with Ruby on Rails and Prototype/Scriptacoulus for Javascript, Ajax and effects. I used act_as_taggable to create tags and tag clouds (simple categorization based on key words). New tips can be received via RSS/Atom feed and E-Mail.
I think the page is a cool way to learn and share about Linux related stuff. I'd be glad if you have a look at http://download.biosdriver.net/?id=11498&comp=AMD%20(was%20ATI%20Technologies%2C%20Inc.)&model=ATI%20MOBILITY%20RADEON%209600%2F9700%20Series%206.14.10.6430 participation is free and no registration is required for voting or creating tips. I'd also love to hear your feedback about the project
Check it out
